We all know that the holidays bring joy and cheer. We also know that included during this joyous time is the “annual feasting” that may occur at our family’s home(s). The joy and cheer does not have to include unhealthy feasting. You can keep off the “holiday pounds” if you just keep in mind that you have a choice. You have a choice during the Thanksgiving holiday to get “bulked up” for a Santa-Clause look at Christmas or make healthier choices. How did you choose to spend those days? Use the time off to appreciate the natural tastes of food and prepare your meals with your health in mind. Try to stay away from greasy, buttery, or sugary foods. Instead, choose to prepare your ham or turkey without gravy or without the skin. Have some broccoli without cheese or steam it without butter. Moderation and variety are key to a healthy lifestyle. Consider this when you have a choice of 20 pies to choose from after a holiday meal. Instead of gorging yourself until you cannot move and then doing it again when you awaken from your nap, graze a little every 2 to 4 hours. This will keep your metabolism up and maintain your energy level during your holiday activities. If you do have deserts, keep your portions low and try to eat a nutrient-rich main course. This will enable you to maintain enough energy to repair your body from the stress and strain of work- and/or workout- related stressors. So, choose to be healthier and have a happy holiday. PS: I want you to know that I am thankful for all that you are and all that you do to enhance my, your own, and others’ lives during this holiday season.
